Welcome to the Statistics Department

baker hallThe Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University is dedicated to the creation and critical study of methods for collecting and analyzing quantitative information, and to the dissemination of knowledge about these methods through teaching and scholarly activity. Although this does not make us much different from many other departments around the world, our Department did develop some unusual distinguishing characteristics.

Founded in 1966, Carnegie Mellon's Department of Statistics evolved separately from the traditional umbrella of Mathematical Sciences in a University environment that emphasized computation, the understanding of human behavior and decision-making, and cross-disciplinary research. This led the Department to define a path for itself by focusing on

  • computational statistics,
  • Bayesian statistics, and
  • cross-disciplinary statistical research

at a time when none of these was recognized as centrally important for a growing department. Today, all are substantial growth areas, and as a result our graduates are in demand for jobs in academia, government, and industry.

Currently we have 18 regular faculty and five visitors training 48 graduate students and teaching 1600 undergraduates per year. We believe we have succeeded in balancing theory with applications, incorporating modern computing technology into both research and education, and building a collegial, energetic environment from which to help lead the profession.
